Papua-New Guinea delegation should visit Tasmania next - Brown
The Rudd government's ministerial team of nine in Papua-New Guinea
should fly home via Tasmania and see the current firebombing of native
forests, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.
"It's good that the people of Papua-New Guinea are seeing the future of
forests as a bankable resource to be protected in an age of carbon
trading. But Kevin Rudd has just offered over $100 million in transport
infrastructure for Gunns' proposed pulp mill in Tasmania, which involves
the logging and burning of native forests for at least 20 years,"
Senator Brown said.
"The nine ministers should fly home via Tasmania to see the destruction
of forests every bit as bad as that in Papua-New Guinea," Senator Brown
said.
Senator Brown said the Greens have campaigned for many years to save
Papua-New Guinea's forests and ban the importation to Australia of
timbers from tropical rainforests.
