Huge 25th Franklin River Anniversary for Hobart

Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, former Tasmanian Premier Doug Lowe and
British TV personality 'Pommie botanist' Professor David Bellamy will
join blockaders and campaigners from across Australia at Hobart's 25th
anniversary celebration of the Franklin River being saved.

On 1 July 1983, the High Court of Australia ruled that the Hawke federal
government had power to stop the Gray state government from destroying
the World Heritage values of the Franklin and Gordon Rivers by building
a 100 metre high rock fill dam across the lower Gordon gorge. 

The decision was a watershed in Australian environmental and legal
history.

At the preceding peaceful blockade of the dam site, 1500 people were
arrested and some 500 jailed. Meanwhile, in the biggest environment
rally in history, 22 000 people marched behind the 'No Dams' banner in
Hobart.

Greens Leader Bob Brown says that 1000 people will join the celebration
on 1 July 2008 at Hobart's Grand Chancellor Ballroom for a fast-moving
panoply of reminiscences, music, film footage and spectacular
photography of the world-renowned Franklin River.

"A $1000 prize is being offered for the best Tasmanian wild rivers
photograph taken since 1983," Senator Brown said.

"We will also have a toast to the pro-dam campaigners. Twenty-five years
on it's time to celebrate their loyalty to Tasmania and heartfelt belief
at the time that the dam offered Tasmania progress."
