Greens back republic referendum

Australian Greens leader Bob Brown today said Greens' Senators would strongly support moves for a referendum on Australia becoming a republic.

"The Greens first called for a simple 'Yes or No' vote on Australia becoming a republic in 1998. The 'Yes' vote was narrowly defeated as a result of Prime Minister John Howard, backed by both Labor and the Coalition, manipulating the question. 

"The 2020 summit has confirmed that the time has come to ask again," Senator Brown said.
