Forestry burns snub world alarm on climate change - Brown
Rudd asked to come and see for himself
The world will be shocked by dramatic film and photographs of this
month's forestry 'degeneration' burns in Tasmania, Greens Leader Bob
Brown said in Hobart today.
Blue smoke haze has cut visibility in Hobart in recent days and huge
columns of carbon-laden smoke have caused thunder clouds over Tasmania
in the otherwise cloudless autumn sky.
"The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should come down and see this shocking
environmental impact which his government agrees to and helps finance,"
Senator Brown said.
"There is no worse in Indonesia or the Amazon. The health impact is not
quantified. The greenhouse gas emissions are not measured and so are not
counted as part of Australia's global warming record. Climate Change
Minister Penny Wong says Australia does not measure the output from
deliberate forest fires because under the Kyoto Protocol it does not
have to."
Senator Brown will take footage of the Tasmanian holocaust to the Global
Greens Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil in May.
