Greens call on Rudd government to ban illegal timber
Australian Greens leader Bob Brown today called on the Australian
government to move to prohibit imports of illegal timber, following a
report from the Australian Institute of Criminology which found that 9
per cent of all timber imports to Australia are from illicit sources.
"For 2 decades there has been plenty of talk about banning imports of
illegally logged timber, but no action," Senator Brown said.
"The Stern Report nails logging of the forests as a worse climate change
menace than all of the world's urban transport. If the Rudd government
is serious about leading the global effort to halt climate change,
stopping illegal logging in Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and
Cambodia has to be at the top of the government's priorities."
"Banning imports of illegally logged timber and timber products into
Australia would be a significant first step," Senator Brown said.
