Get rid of MP parking spot: Greens
The special car parking bays for MPs outside Parliament House should be
scrapped to enable better traffic flow along North Terrace, says Greens
MLC Mark Parnell.
"There is no reason why MPs should get special treatment," said Mr
Parnell.
"We already get a free park behind Parliament House - that should be
enough. How many car parks does one person need?
"Having Minister's cars lined up for hours while people are struggling
to get home during peak hour is just not on - they should be parked
round the back.
"Better still, MPs should be leading by example and trying to leave the
car at home as often as possible to catch public transport, walk or ride
a bike to work," he said.
Recently, after 12 months lobbying, the Greens MLC managed to get a new
bike park on North Terrace for visitors who wish to ride to Parliament
House. Before the park was installed, visitors were forced to
illegally chain their bike to nearby fences or street poles.
"Actions like this are important - a new bike park is installed, and
soon after, car parks are removed. What a fabulous message that would
to send to the community," he said.
