Greens surge to NT poll wins

The Greens have won a breakthrough 3 seats in the Northern Territory
local government elections, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said
today.

"Northern Territory voters have, for the first time, elected 3 Greens to
local government," Senator Brown said.

"In Darwin, former school principle Greg Jarvis was elected to the
council of 12 and in Alice Springs, business woman Jane Clark and
educationist Lisa Hall were elected to the council of nine," Senator
Brown said.

"Following the Greens' vote of more than 8% in the Northern Territory
last year's federal election, these results show just how strongly the
Greens are picking up support in Darwin and regional Australia."

Senator Brown said recent opinion polls show the Greens vote has grown
rapidly across rural and regional Australia.

"People are voting for the Greens to get a much better outcome on issues
such as global warming, water management, protection of biodiversity,
urban planning, transport and recycling," Senator Brown said.

The Australian Greens have 94 local government representatives, 15 state
members of parliament and 5 senators.
