ACT GREENS MLA DEB FOSKEY MEDIA RELEASE
---------------------------
4 April 08
Public housing far and wide
In the light of the planned demolition of Fraser Court in Kingston, ACT
Greens MLA Deb Foskey has called for a commitment from the ACT
Government to provide an adequate supply of public housing right across
Canberra.
"The ACT Government talks about 'salt and peppering' public housing in
new developments, but that must mean all across Canberra" Dr Foskey said
today.
"People on low incomes in our community would like a guarantee that at
least 15% of the new development on the Fraser court site will be public
housing units."
"The ACT Government also needs to promise to replace all 104 residences
that were provided by Fraser Court."
"Too often in this town we have sees a major source of public housing
replaced by private development with a net loss of public housing to
the ACT."
"Housing ACT's own research has pointed out the need for a mix of
tenants to help keep it socially and economically sustainable."
"That is why we need more, not less, public housing in the ACT" Dr
Foskey said.
