Where are the Libs?

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey called on Chief Minister Stanhope and Opposition Leader Seselja to clarify their positions on the airport's Master Plan.

"I have put forward a motion today to raise a number of issues in relation to the expansion of the Canberra Airport, as outlined in its Draft Master Plan, including the call for a curfew" Dr Foskey said today.

"Unfortunately in the bombastic climate of election year politics, the Liberal MLAs secretly broke a long standing Assembly agreement in order to monopolise business in the Assembly this afternoon." 

"This meant we ran out of time to debate my Airport motion and the Liberals thus avoided putting their views on the record."

"The Canberra Liberal Party is in a difficult position.  One of its largest sources of political donations is the Village Building Company, which plans to build at Tralee virtually under the flight path, and wants a curfew."
 
"However, during the political conflict over Epicentre it became clear that the Liberal Opposition was very close to the Airport group too."

"Perhaps that is why we still don't know if the Liberal Opposition  
§	supports uncontrolled development at the airport,
§	has concerns about greenhouse impacts,
§	is sympathetic to the residents concerns about airport noise,
§	would support a curfew from 11 to 6, nor if it
§	is happy for the Tralee development to go ahead.

"The Greens believe airport development, while very important to Canberra, needs to be a part of the wider planning regime, which includes an effective greenhouse strategy and national and regional sustainable transport plans. We oppose the development of Tralee and support the introduction of a curfew."

"The people of Canberra deserve to hear what other parties think too" Dr Foskey said.
