WorkCover Bill still mean and nasty
Greens MLC Mark Parnell has dismissed the Government's proposed watering
down of its WorkCover amendment Bill as a disappointing and minor
concession that will still leave its traditional supporters gutted and
workers much worse off.
"This is still a mean and nasty piece of legislation," said Mr Parnell.
"By far the worst of the Bill remains.
"For instance, injured workers will still be dumped off the scheme after
2 and a half years and others will have their benefits stopped if they
dare to appeal against a WorkCover decision.
"Clauses like this are Dickensian - we thought this type of attack on
workers ended when Howard was voted out last year," he said.
Mark Parnell spoke at the rally on the steps of Parliament House today
in support of the SA Unions campaign, and will attempt widespread
changes to the Bill when it reaches the Upper House.
"At the end of the day, the fundamental changes that mean workers will
be worse off are still very much at the heart of the Government's Bill.
"The Rann Government is fooling no-one with these few minor concessions.
"They are still rushing ahead with a poor solution that will gut its
traditional supporters, and leave many workers struggling," he said.
