Liberal party linked Business must pull out of Burma
29.09.07
The Prime Minister must act on a Liberal party linked business that has
signed a joint oil and gas venture with Burma, Greens Senator Kerry
Nettle said today.
"Twinza Oil which is owned and financed by the powerful Western
Australian Clough family signed a joint venture deal with the Burmese
military regime in November last year.
"Australia must follow the lead of France and suspend corporate
investments in Burma until freedom and democracy is restored."
"Harold Clough and William Clough have both been on the board of the
right wing think-tank the Institute of Public Affairs and Harold Clough
is a well known Liberal Party supporter"
"The Prime Minister should be concerned that such a strong backer of the
Liberal Party is working with the Burmese military."
"John Howard should demand that the Clough family suspend their
investments to bring pressure to bear on the regime."
"This revelation shows that Alexander Downer's claims that Australia has
limited involvement in Burma are untrue."
Many large corporations including Levi Strauss, Pepsi and Apple have
pulled out of investments with Burma citing human rights violations,
the Clough family should do likewise." Senator Nettle said.
