Coal loader decision a travesty

27.09.07

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle condemned a decision of the Federal
Government today to expand coal facilities in the port of Newcastle and
called on the treasure to reverse his decision.

"The Treasurer Peter Costello declined to use his foreign investment
powers and approved the new coal loading facilities not even considering
the climate change implications of his decision.

"Today's decision by Peter Costello to expand coal exports through
Newcastle shows the government's true colours when it comes to climate
change", Greens Senator Kerry Nettle said today.

"Newcastle is already the world's biggest coal port and Australia's
biggest contribution to climate change. Now its capacity will be
doubled."

"Climate change is our greatest challenge, this decision confirms Peter
Costello is unfit to lead the country in the battle against global
warming."

"The expansion of the terminal will mean an additional 66 million tonnes
of coal will be able to be exported per year, when this is burnt more
than another 170 million tonnes of CO2 in the atmosphere."

"In a week when farmers are being forced off the land because of climate
change the Treasurers decision is a travesty."

"Only an urgent shift away from coal to renewable energy such as solar
and wind power will solve the climate crisis."

"The Greens will support non-violent civil disobedience and peaceful
protests to stop the construction of the new coal loader." Senator
Nettle said.
