Downer must do more than just talk on Burma

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle called for real action by Australia on Burma
today. Criticising the Foreign Minister Alexander Downer she called for
sanctions to be put in place until the military junta is pushed from
power. 

"Alexander Downer should do more than talk down the influence of
Australia and other western countries. Saying that Burma does not listen
to Western countries is just an excuse for inaction," Senator Nettle
said.

"Australia should be following the White House's lead and place
sanctions on Burma to support the Saffron revolution."

"As a first step Australia must suspend all security cooperation with
Burma, in particular AFP training of Burmese officials and police under
the auspices of ASEAN."

"At the very least travel and diplomatic sanctions must be put in
place."

"The minister should also examine the activities of Australian companies
operating in Burma, to see if their investments support the regime."

"Strong criticism of Burma is not enough there needs to be action."

Kerry Nettle will join a protest in support of Burmese Democracy in
Martin Place tomorrow.

Senator Nettle has written to the Burmese Ambassador 
outlining her support for democracy in Burma.
