Greens move to block unfair water licence fees

The Greens have moved to disallow water licensing regulations in Parliament’s Upper House today.

Southwest MLC Paul Llewellyn said the pressure is now on the government to accept a new formula for water licensing that is fair and proportionate to people’s entitlement.

Under the proposed licensing arrangements Mr Llewellyn said small farm water allocations will bear most of the cost while larger allocations will get off lightly.

“The Ord River project pays $3000 for 335 gigalitres - and that’s more than Perth’s annual water consumption - while farmers in the South West are paying $1800 for half a gigalitre of water,” said Mr Llewellyn.

Mr Llewellyn said the government has a few weeks to accept a better arrangement.

“We are ready to thrash out an agreement with the government on water licensing arrangements that is fair, proportional and more consistent with the arrangements in other states.”
