Greens vow to defend public TAFE system
25.09.07
Greens Education Spokesperson Senator Kerry Nettle today warned
both Labor and Liberal that The Greens would not allow the privatisation
of the TAFE system.
"Andrew Robb's comments to TAFE directors yesterday clearly
outline the Coalition's desire to privatise TAFE colleges just as they
are privatising the public university system," Senator Nettle said.
"The Greens are passionate about defending the accessibility and
equity characteristics of the TAFE system which means eliminating fees
and maintaining strong government investment.
"The Greens want the federal government to take a greater lead
in supporting TAFE and to turn around the funding freeze of the Howard
years to allow TAFE to reduce and eliminate fees and expand services.
"Sadly the commercialisation of TAFE courses is well under way
in all states. The Greens will work to reverse this trend in during the
next term for federal parliament as well as in State parliaments.
"TAFE makes a huge contribution to the fair go fabric of this
nation. Privatising TAFE is a massive blow to that fair go ethos.
