Downer should back Burmese monks at UN

24.09.07
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today called on Foreign Minister Alexander
Downer to lend Australia's backing to the pro-democracy demonstrations
occurring in Burma while he is at the UN General Assembly meeting in New
York this week.

"As a powerful voice in the Asia Pacific region, Australia must lend its
support to the pro-democracy forces in Burma if we are to have any
credibility on international human rights issues," Senator Kerry Nettle
said.

"The Greens call on the foreign minister to get behind international
efforts to put pressure on the Burmese military regime to hand over
power to the democratically elected leaders of Burma.

"The UK Foreign Minister David Milliband will be raising the Burmese
issue with the UN General Assembly this week. The Greens call on
Alexander Downer to be a strong advocate for pro-democracy pressure on
Burma in the United Nations this week.

"The Greens continue to call for the unconditional release of all
political prisoners in Burma including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and the
negotiated hand over of political power from the military regime to the
elected representatives of the Burmese people, with new elections held
as soon as is possible.

"There is also a lot of support that the UN needs to offer a free
Burmese people to help repair the damage that has been and continues to
be done by the military regime."
