Fire: Brown calls for three-tiered response
All three levels of government - local, state and federal - should come
together urgently to help the Hobart central business district recover
from last night's devastating fire, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.
"The federal government has a role, because this is a devastating blow
to the central business district of a capital city, with hundreds of
jobs and dozens of businesses at stake. It warrants national input and
assistance.
"The fire will ultimately affect the whole dynamic of Hobart's retail
configuration, and at stake is the future of downtown Hobart. It is
likely some businesses will not be insured for loss of trade.
"It's not a cyclone or a bushfire, but it is a calamity with huge impact
and I hope the Howard government will act quickly to help," Senator
Brown said.

Greens State Leader and Member for Denison Peg Putt concurred with Bob
and said it is imperative that a collaborative approach is taken to
address the problems that arise for workers, for business, and for the
future of central Hobart.
