The Triumphant Refugees Short Film Festival 6 - 8pm
Notaris Multicultural Centre


Kerrie Tucker, Green Senate Candidate for the ACT, will welcome people to
the Canberra screening of the Triumphant Refugees Short Film Festival
tonight.

This festival has been brought to Canberra by Triumphant! International and
the United Nations Association of Australia, ACT Branch.

It is the result of collaboration between Triumphant! - a volunteer group of
refugees and friends, Sydney councils, Australian Ethical Investments and
the Foundation for Young Australians Spark Fund; and has two main aims, to
promote awareness of refugee issues and to give refugees an opportunity to
communicate and express themselves through film.
 
Ms Tucker said ŒThis Film Festival has provided refugees with an opportunity
to tell their stories. This is a powerful and important project not only
because it is through people¹s stories that stereotypes are broken down and
understanding grows, but also because it empowers refugees themselves. They
can know that their stories matter, that we are interested and that we
care.² 
 
³Their creative involvement in the film making process also ensures that we
have a unique and authentic record of the treatment, good and bad, that
refugees have received in their struggle to find protection and refuge² Ms
Tucker said.
