[Greens-Media] Senate privileges committee to examine government evidence re Mamdouh Habib's rendition

The Senate has supported The Greens proposal for an investigation into
whether government officials misled the Senate about their knowledge of
Mr Habib's rendition and torture in Egypt. 

"I look forward to the Senate Privileges Committee completing a robust
and vigorous inquiry into this matter," Senator Nettle said. 

"Providing false or misleading evidence to the Senate on such an
important matter is very grave error. 

"The Senate needs to be sure that Australian Ministers and officials
have not provided false or misleading information to us about their
knowledge of Mamdouh Habib's rendition to Egypt and claims of torture in
Egypt. 

"Questions need to answered about how committed the Howard Government is
to human rights." Senator Nettle said.
