Greens put forward Sue Mahony to take on Peter Garrett in Kingsford
Smith

16.09.07

Environmental lawyer Sue Mahony will be taking on Peter Garrett on
behalf of the Greens in the electorate of Kingsford Smith in the
imminent federal election, NSW Greens Senator Kerry Nettle said in
Coogee today.

"I am very pleased that Sue is going to be part of the Greens campaign
team particularly as her work as an environmental lawyer and prosecutor
stand her in great stead to cut through the spin of the major parties,"
Senator Nettle said.

"I look forward to holding Peter Garrett to account over his perpetually
compromised position as shadow Environment Minister", Sue Mahony said.

"When it comes to protecting Australia's wilderness, or getting serious
about cutting greenhouse gas emissions, the ALP and Government are all
too often like peas in a pod. Nowhere is that more evident than Peter
Garrett's silence on the proposed pulp mill $2 billion pulp mill," Ms
Mahony said.

"There are big issues in Kingsford-Smith: Malabar headland, the airport
development and the chemical industry. We also house a world class
university and many students. The students, along with many families in
the area are suffering great financial stress due to the costs of
housing and education, despite Australia's current prosperity," Ms
Mahony said.

"Sue is a fantastic candidate that has done so much for the environment
and community already," Senator Nettle said.

Sue Mahony's Bio

Sue studied at UNSW where she was awarded degrees in Commerce and Law as
well as two University sporting "Blues". She went on to represent
Australia in the marathon and was inducted to the Randwick Sporting Hall
of fame.

Sue has worked in private legal practice in Sydney, the environment
departments of the OECD and the European Commission and for a number of
years in State government prosecuting polluters and protecting national
parks and threatened species. Now a senior manager in local government,
Sue cycles to work and is an active surf club member. She is also
involved in the Aunties and Uncles program and has assisted refugees
facing deportation.

A Spanish speaker, Sue also uses her holidays to pursue environmental
issues, volunteering in an Argentinian NGO for several months on the
ongoing campaign against the Uruguayan pulp mills convincing the
International Finance Corporation that the environmental impact
assessments were inadequate.

Concerned by the Howard government's lack of respect for human rights
and democracy, and that Australia's rising wealth and house prices has
been achieved at the expense of the environment, access to education,
social justice and a sense of community, Sue was motivated to stand for
Kingsford Smith. She offers voters the opportunity to send a message
that Australians want change, and a mere change in government is not
enough. Her campaign will focus on seeking:

	* Preservation of Malabar headland that is precious for its
natural heritage including its endangered Sydney bushland species.
	* Withdrawal of the plans for commercial expansion of the
airport that will be bad for other local businesses and for traffic
congestion at the airport.
	* Strict controls on the local chemical industries.
	* A change in energy and climate change policies including an
end to uranium mining whether for use in domestic nuclear energy or
for export.
	* An end to Australia's involvement in the Iraq war.
	* Applying the benefits of Australia's current economic success
to education and the community.
	* Sue believes the people of Kingsford Smith deserve a local
candidate that is committed to their welfare, both locally and
globally. Sue is aged 41 and lives in Bronte.
