Greens Slam Desal Plan
Greens MLC Mark Parnell has slammed today's announcement by Premier Rann
of a desalination plant for Adelaide.
"$1.4 Billion could have bought a hell of a lot of rainwater tanks, or
made a great start towards the critical infrastructure we need for
stormwater re-use or recycled water.
"Desalination is simply the wrong way to go - it should be last choice
technology, not first choice. It's an incredibly expensive, energy
hungry way to artificially manufacture new water.
"Yet we are wasting so much now on leaky pipes, poor priorities and
inefficient appliances like single flush toilets and urinals. This is
where the money should be spent first - otherwise we will be literally
pouring money down the drain.
"Also, if it goes ahead, this plant must be powered by 100% *new*
renewable energy - anything less will shoot to pieces Premier Rann's
climate change credentials," he said.
