Citizenship test passes parliament while failing the nation

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today warned that Government's citizenship
test which passed the parliament today is set to further erode
Australia's harmonious multicultural society. 

"No matter which way you look at it, the citizenship test is a failure,"
Senator Nettle said. 

"This test will create an unnecessary barrier that will discourage
migrants from applying for Australian citizenship so it's already a
failure. 

"This test is little more than a tepid pre-election stunt as the
Government has not matched its citizenship test booklet with increased
English language education for migrants.

"The citizenship test is based on an Anglo centric view of Australia
that pays scant regard to Australia's rich and diverse cultural
heritage. 

"John Howard will not mention the SIEV X disaster, the invasion of Iraq
or Australia's treatment of Indigenous people and that's why the
citizenship test is  dishonest

"The Greens will campaign to repeal this citizenship test during and
after the election," Senator Nettle said.
