QUEENSLAND GREENS MEDIA RELEASE

GREENS SEND BEST WISHES TO BEATTIE
The Australian Greens today sent their best wishes to retiring
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie.
“I congratulate Peter Beattie on the decision to ban broadscale land
clearing and to protect Queensland’s remaining free-flowing rivers. The
Greens wish him all the best in his retirement,” Greens leader Bob Brown
said today.
Senator Brown also called on Premier Beattie’s successor to review the
decision to build the Mary and Logan River dams, which have been widely
criticised by local residents and threaten the ancient Mary River lungfish.
“The Mary and Logan River dams have been widely criticised by local
residents, conservationists, farmers, local government, and even the
National party. All agree that the dams would be an economic,
environmental and social disaster and would not solve the current water
crisis in South East Queensland,” said Greens lead Senate candidate for
Queensland, Larissa Waters.
“The Greens support more effective and sustainable solutions, like a
rainwater tank for every South East Queensland home, stormwater
harvesting and water recycling” said Ms Waters.
The Greens will run a candidate in the by-election for Mr Beattie’s seat
of Brisbane Central. Senate candidate Larissa Waters ran against Mr
Beattie in Brisbane Central in 2006 and received 18.3% of the vote, a 6%
swing.
