The Dark Side of the Boom
Greens call for companies to pay full cost of environmental compliance monitoring
The parliamentary enquiry into Esperance lead levels and the Auditor Generals report on illegal land clearing shows the under funding of the DEC has rendered them under skilled and ineffective. says Greens MLC for the South West, Paul Llewellyn. As a consequence the full cost of our economic boom is being reflected in environment and community damage.
We propose the full cost of government compliance monitoring be levied on developers license fees. It would be far cheaper to fund effective compliance than to fund massive compensation payouts, as are being seen in Esperance, due to compliance failure.
Throughout Western Australia community groups are struggling to bring many other examples of compliance failure to the public and governments attention because the DEC appears to have neither the manpower or willpower to protect them.
If government and developers want to maintain our burgeoning economic growth, and community wants environmental protection, we need money to fund compliance costs. This is a simple user-pays proposal.
