Greens call for APEC climate savers
7.09.07
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle and Greens MP Sylvia Hale joined 21 Greens
members in the APEC security area today calling for real action on
climate change.
The 21 Greens members dressed as life savers holding up a large Earth
ball above rising sea blue ribbons of material held signs saying "hey
APEC be a climate saver."
Police had previously threatened to take The Greens to the Supreme Court
to prevent the protest in the APEC declared area but relented yesterday
and backed the protest.
"We are facing catastrophic sea level rises of several metres this
century unless world leaders act now," Senator Nettle said.
"How many more summits of world leaders do we need before they take real
action on climate change?"
"Aspirational targets are useless. We need real targets and drastic
action to reduce greenhouse gas pollution in the next decade."
"The average Aussie life saver understands the danger of global warming
better than John Howard. This is John Howard's last chance to be a
climate saver."
"George Bush and John Howard are beholden to the coal and oil industry
and are using APEC to put forward false solutions."
"Nuclear power and clean coal are dangerous pipedreams that will only
delay the real action that is needed."
"We need a global programme backed by the UN post Kyoto framework to
shift from coal to renewable energy. Industrial countries will need to
help the developing world to make the transition."
The Greens want an 80% reduction in greenhouse pollution by 2050 and a
shift from coal to renewable energy.
