Suburbs Sacrificed for Massive 24/7 Logistics Centre
NSW Greens MP and spokesperson on Planning, Sylvia Hale, today condemned the approval by Planning Minister Sartor of the Intermodal Logistics Centre next to the former Enfield Railway Marshalling Yards.
"The centre will operate seven days a week, 24 hours a day," said Ms Hale, "in the process handling more than 300,000 six-metre long containers every year," said Ms Hale.
"Each day and night more than 1,000 semi-trailers and B-doubles will enter and leave the site, as well as thousands of smaller trucks and vehicles.
"It is not an efficient location. Loading containers at Port Botany, moving them 15-20 km to Enfield, and then unloading and repacking them for distribution throughout Sydney will only add to the city's congestion.
"The centre is surrounded by eight densely populated residential suburbs including Greenacre, Lakemba, Belmore, and Strathfield," Ms Hale said.
"The noise, air pollution, and traffic will be an ongoing nightmare for residents, effectively destroying their quality of life.
"Once again, the Minister for Planning - and the Premier in whose electorate the centre is located - cynically delayed approval of the proposal until the State elections were well out of the way.
"And the Minister's decision has been announced at a time when he hopes all interest will be focused on APEC rather than on his cynical manipulation of the planning laws," Ms Hale said.
"Clearly, the Government is laying the grounds for the M4 east extension and construction of the Marrickville truck tunnel which will massively increase congestion throughout the inner-western suburbs," concluded Ms Hale.
