League tables will not help public schools

5.09.07

Greens Education spokesperson Senator Kerry Nettle today criticised
Government and Opposition plans to tie federal schools funding to the
publishing of school league tables.

"The Greens are concerned by Labor's announcement that they have joined
the Government in supporting the publication of school league tables,"
Senator Nettle said.

"The publication of school league tables does not improve the quality of
education in our schools. League tables are about politics not
education."

"League tables are widely criticised within the teaching profession
because they entrench disadvantage for schools which need assistance,
not bad publicity.

"The league table approach has failed in the UK to deliver improvements
for struggling schools, instead leading to school closures.

"The Greens call on John Howard and Kevin Rudd to invest in our great
public schools.

"Public schools need to be supported to deliver top quality education
not be threatened with a withdrawal of funding if they reject populist
proposals such a league tables that are of no educational value,"
Senator Nettle said.
