Greens call for small business compensation for and by APEC

4.09.07

NSW Greens Senator Kerry Nettle is urging the Government to compensate
small businesses whose trade is affected by the APEC wall dividing
Sydney's CBD.

The NSW Chamber of Business has said a conservative estimate of the cost
to business is $327 million.

"The Prime Minister boasts of APEC's pro-business credentials but has
made no move to compensate the scores of small businesses who have found
their turnover has dried up thanks to the APEC security barriers in
Sydney's CBD," Senator Nettle said.

"It's not like compensation is radical. The Australian Government has
established a $4 million fund to provide emergency grants to individuals
suffering financial difficulty as a result of the equine influenza
outbreak and more than $15 million in emergency assistance to people
affected by the Hunter and Central Coast floods.

"The Federal Government also signed cheques for businesses adversely
affected by the cyclone Larry in the order of a one-off, tax-free grant
of either $10 000 or $25 000, depending on the extent of costs or loss.

"With APEC being little more than the most expensive election campaign
launch Australia has ever seen, the least the Prime Minister could do is
compensate small businesses affected by its suffocating security
arrangements," Senator Nettle said.
