Fair Deal for Cleaners
Kerrie Tucker, Greens Senate Candidate for the ACT, will speak at the ACT
Legislative Assembly at noon today today in support of the Clean Start :
Fair Deal for Cleaners campaign.
"People working in this industry are vulnerable and not industrially strong.
They are often women, migrants and part-time workers" Ms Tucker said today.
"Under the brave new world of the Howard Government¹s industrial relations
laws this group has become increasingly disadvantaged."
"As a Member of the Legislative Assembly I supported legislation which
provided for portability of long service leave for cleaners because it was
clear that the nature of their work put them at a disadvantage."
"Now we see office cleaners being asked to do more and more work without
increased hours this is leading to a crisis in the industry and a drop in
standards of cleaning."
"Cleaners are having to work several jobs to earn the same inadequate
salary. Their health and family life is severely impacted."
"So much for a fair Australia!"
"There are huge barriers existing for non-English speaking people to be able
to understand their rights , let alone demand them."
"I congratulate the LHMU for their strong advocacy for justice in the
workplace for particularly vulnerable workers" Ms Tucker said.
