ACT GREENS MLA DEB FOSKEY MEDIA RELEASE
---------------------------
29 June 07
Public housing is the bottom line
ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey has described the recent termination of an ACT
subsidised housing scheme for people living with disadvantage and
disability as evidence of the need to grow the supply of public housing.
"I feel for the tenants who can no longer afford to stay in their
private rental homes" Dr Foskey said.
"Clearly this would not have been the case if they were government
homes."
"The private rental market is not secure, and ad hoc rental subsidy
programs rarely address the root cause of housing problems."
"As the ACT Government and tenants have had at least a year to make
other arrangements, I am most disappointed that so many people seem to
be unhappy with the situation now the scheme has ended."
"Making the remaining tenants a top priority for Housing ACT is the
obvious fall back position, but it results in other applicants being
pushed down the list."
"In Estimates last week the Minister for Housing suggested my call for
more public housing is old fashioned. A bit of old fashioned secure and
affordable housing wouldn't go astray here" Dr Foskey said.
