dumping nuke waste on their land

WHEN: 10.30am, Monday, 25 June 2007

WHERE: NSW Parliament House Interview Room, Lvl 6, NSW
Parliament House, Sydney

Traditional Owners from the Northern Territory speak out about plans to
dump waste from Australia and overseas* on their land. The group
includes Diane Stokes from Muckaty who strongly disagrees with the small
number of Muckaty Traditional Owners who have accepted $12 million in
exchange for agreeing to accept the waste.

The group seek to confront and dispel the myth used to justify the
siting of the nuclear waste dump in Australia, that remote areas are
uninhabited and lifeless places. With an estimated 40 years of storage
at Lucas Heights, there is no need to be transporting spent fuel to the
Northern Territory.

* The Liberal Party Federal Council passed a motion earlier this month
urging the Government to build a "worldwide nuclear waste storage in the
geotechnically stable and remote areas that Australia has to offer".
