Greens call on Howard, Rudd to usher in same-sex equality

Greens Leader Bob Brown has called on Prime Minister Howard and
Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd to end discrimination against same-sex
couples under Australian laws.

Responding to today's Galaxy poll, commissioned by GetUp!, Senator Brown
said there has been a huge change in public opinion which should now be
reflected in Parliament.

"Seventy-one per cent of Australians want same-sex couples to have the
same legal rights as heterosexual de facto couples. And 57% support
same-sex marriage," Senator Brown said.

"Labor and the Coalition went out of their way to legislate against
same-sex marriage just three years ago. They are both out of touch with
twenty-first century Australia. It's high time that Australia caught up
with other countries, like Catholic Spain, which have ended
discrimination on the basis of sexuality," Senator Brown said.
