Greens Gain Undertaking from Biomass Proponents
Southwest Greens MLC Paul Llewellyn has gained undertaking from the proponents of the Bridgetown Biomass project to fully Investigate issues of concern to the local community.
The proponents have already started looking more closely at issues such as air quality, siting and better communication with the community. This will help residents in the area to participate in a well informed debate on the issues raised by bio energy projects, says Mr Llewellyn.
The proponents have agreed to examine alternatives to the proposed site, and have called on the community for suggestions for them to consider.
They have also agreed to give a formal commitment that native timber will never be used to fuel the plant. To use native timber would remove the plants renewable energy accreditation and require a separate Environmental Protection Statement to be submitted by the company to the EPA.
With regards to emission control, the proponents have agreed to extend their emmsiions modelling research with particular reference to the potential for atmospheric inversions and adverse impacts in the Blackwood valley. Its imperative that all potential threats to air quality and community health are fully investigated and resolved before there are any further moves to establish the plant at any site in the region.
If the residents of Bridgetown and Greenbushes are to be comfortable with this project, its important that all facts are put on the table in a clear and easily understood format.
Other South west communities including Albany are also coming to terms with biomass power proposals as a result of the massive increase in bluegum plantations in the region.
Because biomass has clear greenhouse gas benefits, it is important that we work together to find sustainable and acceptable solutions for this new industry.
