Melbourne Shooting Shows Tougher Gun Controls Needed

 NSW Greens MP Sylvia Hale expressed her condolences to the family of
those injured or killed in today’s Melbourne shooting and called on
NSW Premier Morris Iemma to introduce tighter restrictions on the sale
and purchase of handguns in NSW.

 “This incident reinforces the need for tougher control of
handguns,” said Ms Hale.

 “Semi-automatic handguns can still be bought and sold in NSW. I can
see no compelling reason for anyone other than police to be carrying
such guns.”

“It is unacceptable for this sort of incident to be happening on the
streets of our cities or towns. The NSW Labor government must stop
pandering to the shooters lobby and focus on its responsibility to
protect the community from violence involving guns,” said Ms Hale.
