Brown returns NSW Business Chamber's greenhouse gas challenge
Greens Leader Bob Brown has challenged the NSW Business Chamber members
to open their books for a thorough greenhouse gas emissions survey,
following their claim that he uses more domestic air miles than other
Parliamentarians.
"The Chamber is ignoring international travel and has come to the
remarkable conclusion that you use more greenhouse gases travelling from
Hobart to Canberra than you do travelling from Sydney to Canberra,"
Senator Brown said.
"The Chamber comes to the specious conclusion, therefore, that I am a
bigger polluter than Peter Garret or Malcolm Turnbull."
"But you have to look at the whole carbon footprint. In recent years my
little farm in Tasmania has absorbed 400 tonnes of greenhouse gases as
the forest grows back. Last year, my personal court action stopped
logging - which is backed by both Turnbull's and Garrett's political
parties - in the 10,000 hectare Wielangta Forest in Tasmania and I claim
a role in saving the vast Franklin river rainforests which have absorbed
millions of tonnes of greenhouse gases."
"So here's my challenge to the Chamber: open your books, including
household and business power bills, share portfolios, vehicle ownership
and air travel. Let's see the lot," Senator Brown said.
