Australia should commit to humanitarian efforts in Sudan - Greens

Australia should focus on humanitarian efforts in Sudan rather than
military efforts in Iraq, Australian Greens leader Bob Brown said today.

"The Howard government's priorities are upside down. It is incongruous
that Australia can find troops for the war in Iraq but not to keep the
peace in Darfur," Senator Brown said.

"The Howard government promised Australia would not to turn its back on
Darfur, yet it has turned its back on committing troops to the joint
UN-African Union humanitarian efforts in Sudan," Senator Brown said.

In June 2004 Senator Brown was the first Parliamentarian to call on the
government to intervene in the slaughter in Darfur.
