Greens: wait and see on ACTU campaign
"The ACTU has the right to campaign in the election to change unfair
workplace laws, and the real proof they are running a non-partisan
campaign will come when they inform voters who has the best IR
policies," said Senator Rachel Siewert today.
"Last October the ACTU Congress was clearly told that the 'Your Rights
at Work' campaign would never be a sectarian vote-ALP campaign, and we
remain assured that the ACTU will inform their members about where all
the parties stand on industrial relations."
"This is a good thing, because with the ALP backing down on unfair
dismissal laws and the ABCC star-chamber and going weak at the knees on
AWAs, an honest union campaign is bound to score the Greens ahead of
Labor," she said.
"The Greens are confident that the ACTU campaign will remain a campaign
against Work Choices and not become a default campaign for the ALP,"
said Senator Siewert.
"The ACTU are smart enough to understand the Senate numbers and to
realise the likelihood of a new government in the lower house being
hamstrung by the Senate remaining in conservative hands," said Senator
Siewert.
"If they are as keen to see through their commitment to get rid of Work
Choices as we think, then they will now be looking beyond campaigning in
marginal seats and taking the Senate seriously."
"The Greens are now waiting to see how it rolls out."
