MEDIA RELEASE - 12 June 2007

Moratorium needed on NSW clubs push to build on-site aged housing

Greens MP and gambling spokesperson Lee Rhiannon has called for a moratorium on the Iemma government's plan to encourage NSW clubs to develop on-site aged housing until the IPART review into the registered clubs industry is complete.

"This move by the Iemma government to tweak planning laws to encourage clubs to expand into housing for seniors is on the nose", said Ms Rhiannon.

"The Greens' call for a moratorium on this plan until the current IPART review into the registered clubs industry is complete. The IPART review will consider public submissions and look closely at the role of clubs in the community.

"Smoothing the way for aged housing facilities to be built on the site of NSW clubs will hand clubs a captive market for their poker machines.

"Many people living in aged housing no longer have their own cars and have to look on-site for their entertainment. Under this plan, pokies would become the closest and easiest option.

"This plan smacks of perverse planning. Aged care facilities should be put where they are most needed, not at the whim of clubs that want to boost their profits.

"Pubs and clubs in NSW donated over $4 million to the NSW ALP in the last seven years. In the same time almost $1.5 million was donated to the NSW Coalition.

"Given these massive donations to the Iemma government from pubs and clubs, you have to ask whether a deal hasn't already been done on this issue behind closed doors.

"The draft legislation is already on the table and consultation comes as an afterthought.

"These controversial changes should be shelved until the comprehensive IPART review is finished in 2008", said Ms Rhiannon.
