Out of Sight Out of Mind

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey has called for the ACT Government to look more
closely at the impact of its decisions to cut services last year, rather
than shrugging it off with the  'steady as she goes' budget introduced
into the Assembly yesterday.

"ACT Housing is now seeking information from non-government service
providers on the impact of last year's closure of its housing
shopfronts" Dr Foskey said today.

"That confirms my view that the Government hasn't monitored the impact
of last year's cost cutting, and service slashing, budget."

"While the Minister has argued this demonstrates ACT Housing's great
care for and interest in its clients, I see it as evidence that
Government is out of touch, and that the service providers are having to
do the Department's job."

 "I have asked the Minister whether he intends to provide the
non-government housing services with extra funding to do ACT Housing's
job, now two avenues to access have been shut down.  I look forward to
his answer." 

 "More profoundly, this exercise is evidence that the ACT Government
still hasn't looked closely at the consequences of last year's horror
budget" Dr Foskey said.



Note:  The Director of ACT Housing recently wrote to non-government
housing service providers asking for information on the number of
additional clients presenting with housing concerns, the increased
difficulties they are having due to those closures, and the increased
work load being carried by the agencies.
