Senator Nettle joins protesters to mark World Environment Day
05.06.07
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle joined protesters outside NSW State
Parliament to mark World Environment Day by calling for Federal and
State government policy to phase out coal and set serious targets for
reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"More and more ordinary citizens will be taking to the streets and
raising their voices to call for urgent action to prevent dangers global
warming if the State and Federal governments continue to fudge the
issue," Senator Nettle said.
"The Greens call for a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020
and at least 80% by 2050 has today been echoed by Australia's leading
environment groups informed by the best climate science available.
"If we don't make these cuts global temperatures will increase beyond
two degrees and that's when the climate change becomes dangerous.
"Mining coal in Australia to be burnt around the world is the biggest
contribution Australia makes to the problem and we must phase out coal
if we are to avoid dangerous climate change.
"The Greens are saying that we need a transition plan now to help
communities that currently rely on the coal industry instead of allowing
them to collapse when the world market for coal collapses as a result of
anti-climate change policies.
"World Environment Day is being marked by protests in cities around
Australia by a diverse set of concerned groups that are angry that
governments are not taking the issue seriously."
