Greens Senator backs Anvil Hill coal mine weekend of protest.
1.06.2007
NSW Greens Senator Kerry Nettle speaking at a public protest at
Centennial Coal headquarters today said she will join the protests in
the Hunter Valley this Sunday to oppose the development of Anvil Hill
mine.
"Any efforts by the federal and state governments to address climate
change cannot be taken seriously while they continue to sign off on the
construction of new coal mines like Anvil Hill", Senator Nettle said.
"The proposed open cut mine will have a massive impact on the local
community which is why the local multi-million dollar wine and horse
industry are opposing the mine. It would require enormous amounts of
water and neither the mine or government are able to say where the water
will come from during this drought.
"The mine will produce more emissions than come from all vehicles on NSW
roads every year. The actions of the state and federal governments are
jeopardising not just the local community but our children's future.
"I look forward to joining the several hundred people that have
committed to making a huge human banner that will read 'Save Anvil Hill'
on Sunday 3rd June at midday at the site.
NB The Save Anvil Hill public protest will be near the town of Denman in
the Upper Hunter valley on Sunday 3 June 2007.
