Greens welcome DPP review and call on Minister Andrews to review his decision

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today welcomed the Commonwealth DPP's decision to review the case against Dr Haneef and called on Minister Andrews to review his decision to cancel Dr Haneef's visa.

"The DPP can only proceed with a case if they think that it is likely to succeed. Given the errors in the police case against Dr Haneef, now is a good time for the DPP to review the case against Dr Haneef," said Senator Nettle.

"Minister Andrews needs to review his decision to cancel Dr Haneef's visa. Minister Andrews cancelled Dr Haneef's visa on the basis of inaccurate information.

"If Minister Andrews wants the public to have confidence in his decision to cancel Dr Haneef's visa then he must review the case excluding the inaccurate information he used about who Dr Haneef had lived with and why he had a one way ticket to India.

"The police case against Dr Haneef has been riddled with errors and is progressively falling apart.

"The UK police have not claimed that Dr Haneef's cousin who had the SIM card was engaged in terrorist activities and have not asked for Dr Haneef's extradition.

"A review of the case against Dr Haneef provides an opportunity for the charges to be dropped.

"Dr Haneef has been locked up for 3½ weeks, granted bail and the charges against him are still not finalised.

"The community is right to question the terror laws that are allowing this to happen. The Greens will seek to amend the terror laws when parliament resumes.

"Now that the DPP are reviewing the case against Dr Haneef, Minister Andrews must review his decision to cancel Dr Haneef's visa," said Senator Nettle.
