Labor must resist pressure tactics and reject coal fired power station
Premier Iemma must not succumb to Macquarie Generation’s tactics of
pressuring his Labor Government to make a decision on building a new
coal-fired power station in the Hunter Valley, said Greens MP Lee
Rhiannon today.
”Macquarie Generation is pressuring Labor to approve a new coal-fired
power station in the Hunter Valley,” said Ms Rhiannon.
“Labor’s reputation will be in tatters if they succumb to pressure
from Macquarie Generation and decide to build a new coal-fired power
station.
“This decision is not urgent. We have time to pursue energy
efficiency and renewable energy alternatives to coal-fired power.
“The sense of urgency comes from Macquarie Generation who are feeling
the pressure as other countries begin planning to phase out coal.
“Premier Iemma must commit to building a strong NSW economy based on
renewables and energy efficiency.
“The Premier can protect jobs and lower greenhouse gas emissions by
rejecting any new coal-fired power stations and instead creating a clean
energy boom.
“Labor should take a stand and rule out any new coal-fired power
stations in NSW," Ms Rhiannon said.
