Minchin predicts demise of Democrats, balance of power to Greens
The Government's leader in the senate, Nick Minchin, today issued a
Senate version of John Howard's "annihilation" warning about the House
of Representatives last month. 
"Based on House of Representatives voting intentions (Newspoll last
weekend) which he has spuriously converted to Senate intentions, Minchin
predicts the Greens will win a minimum one extra Senate seat and the
balance of power," Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.
"His real worry is that the Greens could hold a Howard government to
account in the Senate and return the Senate to its time-honoured
responsible role as the Australian people's house of review," Senator
Brown said.
"But we are chuffed that Nick has such confidence in our vote-pulling
potential. I agree with him," Senator Brown said.
