Parliamentary recall recoil
The government has gone to ground over the proposed recall of parliament
to deal with the 'national emergency' in the Northern Territory, Greens
Leader Bob Brown said today.
"Maybe the Prime Minister wants to give MPs minimum notice and ram
through legislation with zilch debate and zero committees. We are now
just 4 weeks short of resuming scheduled sittings on 7th August and a
recall looks less and les justifiable. A recall would cost $1 - 2
million and must be presenting Mr Howard's minders with a real public
relations headache," Senator Brown said.
"Legislation to override the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, let alone the
Racial Discrimination Act, will be hugely contentious and demand proper
public scrutiny, including Senate committee reviews," Senator Brown
said.
