Pasha Bulker lessons ignored by USS Kitty Hawk visit.

5 July 2007

"The anchoring of the potentially nuclear weapons carrying USS Kitty
Hawk inside Sydney Harbour is inherently dangerous and should mark the
last time the community is unnecessarily exposed to the risk of nuclear
accident," Greens Senator Kerry Nettle said today.

"The recent grounding of the MV Pasha Bulker clearly demonstrates that
accidents can happen. A nuclear accident involving the USS Kitty Hawk
would be catastrophic," Senator Nettle said.

"USS Kitty Hawk claims to have over 2,000 tons of ordinance on board,
ranging from air and surface-launched missiles and other munitions that
all add to the risk to the people of Sydney.

"The United States' long running policy of not revealing if particular
ships carry nuclear weapons creates unnecessary uncertainty for the
ports on the ship's itinerary.

"The Greens believe that nuclear weapons should be banned and therefore
any ship that refuses to rule out carrying them should not be welcome in
Australian ports.

"The 46 year old USS Kitty Hawk is on its farewell tour before being
de-commissioned. The nuclear weapons that it may be carrying should be
de-commissioned as well," Senator Nettle said.
