The Kimberley pipedream that won't go away

"How many times do we have to prove that a pipeline from the Kimberley
is economically stupid and environmentally disastrous?" said Senator
Rachel Siewert today.

"Paul Omodei's latest pipedream is little different to the 'Far Canal'
proposal that proved so disastrous for the Liberals at the last state
election, or the handful of other 'visionary' populist proposals cooked
up in an economic and ecological vacuum," she said.

"Now, with the prospect of the combined forces of climate change and oil
depletion signalling that we need to be much more frugal with our energy
use in the face of inevitable energy price rises, it is not the time to
be committing to energy-hungry mega-projects," said Senator Siewert.

"There are a multitude of common-sense solutions to our water problems
which deliver cheaper, more sustainable and more effective answers
without the wealth of additional risks to our environment, our economy
and our energy security."

"The days of thinking big without thinking smart are over. The future
lies in a decentralised approach to appropriate 'green' technologies
that spread the risks and minimise the costs to deliver long-term
solutions within ecological limits."

"It is time to leave behind this dinosaur thinking."
