MEDIA RELEASE - 26 April 2007
Eden chip mill protests vital to halt climate change
Greens MP Lee Rhiannon today congratulated protesters at the Eden chip
mill and called on Premier Iemma to end the logging of NSW’s South
East forests.
“Premier Iemma’s failure to arrest the plundering of our South East
native forests is a stark example of his refusal to bite the climate
change bullet,” Ms Rhiannon said.
“Today’s claims by Mr Vince Phillips of South-East Fibre Exports,
owner of the Eden chip mill, that logging native forests is a climate
friendly industry are grossly inaccurate.
“This is classic deception from an industry of environmental vandals.
Burning wood is by no means carbon neutral.
“The sun and wind are the ingredients of climate change industries,
not our native forests.
“The Premier should take on the job of closing down the native forest
industry and building NSW’s renewable energy sector which is the real
job creation powerhouse for the future.
“In 1995 Labor Premier Bob Carr promised to end wood chipping by the
year 2000.
“The climate change crisis now makes honouring this commitment even
more pressing,” Ms Rhiannon said.
