Governator set emissions targets before doing costings

Australian Greens Climate Change Spokesperson, Senator Christine Milne,
said:

"Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's world-leading response to
climate change by setting deep cuts targets without previously costing
their economic impact makes a lie of Prime Minister Howard's claim that
emission reduction targets without costings is irresponsible.

"In 2005, Governor Schwarzenegger signed an executive order establishing
targets to reduce greenhouse emissions by 80% by 2050, and then directed
a Climate Action Team to develop a strategy to achieve the targets and
to report by January 2006 on progress.

"Contradicting the Prime Minister's view that deep cuts will be
negative, the Californian Climate Action Team found that implementation
of the strategies would result in 83,000 new jobs and $4 billion in
income above and beyond the substantial growth the substantial growth
that will occur between today and 2020."
