Greens Commend DEC for KCGM Breach Fine
Greens MLC for the South West, Paul Lllewellyn today commended the Department of Environment for fining mining company KCGM for environmental breaches saying he hoped it was an indication of a shift towards better monitoring of compliance by the Department.
After over 2 years of me asking questions in Parliament about these and other similar breaches the DEC have finally imposed a fine, says Mr Llewellyn.
What particularly concerns me is that the Department lacks the capacity to monitor the hundreds of conditions it has attached to mining and industry projects around the state.
With the recent lead poisoning debacle at Esperance, perhaps the Department has begun to take seriously its obligation to ensure Ministerial Conditions attached to project approvals are complied with.
Until prosecutions for breaching Ministerial Conditions are the norm rather than the exception, industry will continue to ignore them and communities adjacent to these projects will continue to suffer the consequences.
